Meiji Tokyo Renka was released earlier this year (January 9) as I am writing this (in case if you are reading this perhaps a year or two in the future). At the moment, it is ongoing with only 5-6 episodes in the subs and 4-5 episodes in English dub. Based on the visual novel of the same name, the story takes place in Tokyo where a highschool student by the name of Mei gets sent back in time to the Meiji Period. She also has the ability to see and hear spirits which is a major aspect for the plot itself.
The anime is a historical-fiction romantic comedy which actually makes it rather interesting. Seeing how they’re incorporating historical facts and people (such as Mori Ogai), it actually made me understand history (which is very hard to do since I am horrible in history as it is) and want to learn more. I did start watching this while I was reading the manga/playing visual novels for Valentine’s day, but I actually forgot to write about it (Sorry!!!).
It really bothers me how dense this girl is- especially in the 2 most recent episodes- I can understand that she’s not from the time period, but there are a few things that were absolutely noticeable and she didn’t see them from the get-go. I’m still a bit iffy on the electricity song since it did seem rather random in my opinion – I guess it sort of worked because they did make an effort in having it being a part of the 6th episode without it being 100% random, but I guess it’s just my initial reaction.
I’m not going to give this anime an overall rating yet since it is only 6 episodes in, but I’m considering either doing a review per episode or waiting until the anime is complete in order to give it a full review. Please let me know what you guys think/want. Your feedback is appreciated. Until next time, keep your paws and bowls of ramen up, everyone! Nya! 🐾
