Pride Month: My Favorites (2020)

This year has definitely been an eventful one so far. With everything that’s going on, it’s kind of hard to even focus on yourself or basically anything that might take your mind off of the many events in the world. However, I was able to find many interesting things throughout the month—some of which I might create posts for in the future. However, to end this Pride Month, here are my favorite LGBT things for 2020.

Anime: Antidote

Antidote is a Chinese BL anime about an artist who runs into a gang-leader after being rejected by his family. The artist moves into the gang-leader’s sister’s apartment and they soon start to learn more about each other despite having to “begin with conflict with each other over mutual misunderstanding” (quote taken from yaoi wiki). The story itself is really interesting and you always want to know what happens next. I haven’t been able to stop watching it since I’ve started. I did have to resort to watching the anime on YouTube since I didn’t know where else to find it. If you get the chance, please check it out.

Drama: The Untamed

The Untamed is a Chinese Historical- Fantasy BL Drama released in 2019. It is based on the popular danmei “Mo Dao Zu Shi” (The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. It’s become fairly popular overtime. I’m a bit ashamed to say that I have been putting off seeing it until now. It’s really interesting. So far, I’ve seen 8 episodes (there’s more than 30 or 40 if I’m not mistaken). So much has happened within those episodes that it would be a bit hard to explain it through here. It’s currently available on Netflix. I do recommend it if you have the time and would like to see a Chinese Historical-Fantasy drama.

Webtoon: The Doctors are Out

This is an ongoing Webtoon by Blau. It’s basically about a new vet moving into a part of the town and clashing with the town doctor. Reason? Initially, it was because they have the same last name and the town doctor was suddenly getting clients for the vet. Now, they’re still clashing every so often, but their relationship (so far it’s just friendship) is growing bit by bit. One of my favorite parts was seeing the vet taking care of the doctor’s child. It was really cute and it made me want to have one of my own (an adoptive child) if I ever end up with another woman. I really do recommend it. It’s really cute, funny, and you’re always wondering what’s going to happen and how they’re going to get closer.

Game: When The Night Comes

When the Night Comes is a dating sim by Lunaris Games. The game starts off with asking you your name and pronouns (she/her, he/him, they/them). There are 8 routes in total (6 solo routes and 2 polyamourous routes). One of the characters (August) is non-binary. The art is incredibly beautiful. The game (from what I heard) used to be free but now it costs $5 (which is still a good price due to how amazing this game is).

BONUS: Novel: Let’s Talk About Love by: Claire Kann

Let’s Talk About Love is definitely my most favorite thing this year. The protagonist is an asexual bi-romantic woman of color who is still trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life while dealing with her family’s high expectations of her becoming a lawyer (she doesn’t want to though). The novel starts off with the protagonist breaking up with her girlfriend because she (the girlfriend) couldn’t understand why the protagonist wouldn’t be as sexually physically active as she is. The entire novel hit home for me. My best friend had recommended this to me since I also have trouble with being asexual and am still healing from a break-up. My favorite quote from this novel is “This goes without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway, partly because I want to, but also because I think you need to hear it. If knowing you’re asexual makes someone see you differently, then they don’t deserve to be in your life. My feelings for you are exactly the same as they were an hour ago. This doesn’t change anything between us” (page 210). I cried when I read that because it made me happy at the thought that someone would actually think that way when someone tells them they’re ace.
